The Grey Reduction Articles
The Grey Reduction is the series that was called Field Notes. In the rebrand it took a new name, and every piece that went out as a Field Note lives here under the name it was published with.
- When Small Stops MatteringA field note on going back into something I already built, the repairs that turn into paperwork, and finding a next move that actually changes something.
- Like Somebody AnsweringA field note on a sentence built from my own words that wasn't mine, why I didn't let my doubts write its replacement, and knowing how to rest.
- Some of It Was Never a FightA field note on the difference between two things fighting and two things standing too close together, and on having to choose before you know which one you have.
Filling Into a Full GlassA field note on getting exactly where I was going, finding out nobody lives there, and what a body does about it all day.
The Emergency Ended and the Work StayedA field note on the stretch after the fire goes out, and what preparing means when you cannot name the thing you are preparing for.
Nobody Is Walking Around in the DarkA field note on the people who notice before I do, and the difference between getting better at something and getting ahead of anybody.
Under a Smaller NameA stranger in the rain, a friend who keeps showing up, and the word I chose for what reached me.
Reality Takes Time to Catch UpA field note on the distance between changing and being noticed, and the old version of yourself that still works perfectly well while you wait.
The Witness with a ChoiceMy first try at fiction. A field note on a handmade map, a stranger at a fork, and what I owe somebody who asks me which way to go.
I Had to Grow to Fit My Own ShoesA field note on getting sober without a date to point at, and the man who was already being built inside the one still drinking.
The Docket Does Not EndA field note on a docket that stays full no matter how much I finish, the difference between unfinished and unmoving, and taking the day before the work is done.
And Then WhatA field note on following a fear all the way down to death, and finding out the distance was the only useful thing on the road.
Truth Is SoupA field note on what happens to something true after it leaves you, and the difference between understanding somebody and swallowing it.
I Had a Better Idea, but It Got Lost in the StaticA field note on losing a thought in the middle of ordinary life, the noise that comes with being alive, and the part of it that has your hand in it.
Who Do You Think Wrote This?A field note on where a piece of writing actually starts, and why the only part anybody can measure is the last page.
Truth Through a FilterA field note on the years I spent reading my own handwriting and calling it the world’s.
Wears Me Down, Holds Me TogetherA field note on a year at a job I keep wanting to leave, and the same work that wears me down and holds me together.
Art for Love's SakeA field note on the hidden bill I attached to work I swore I was giving away for free.
No Wrong Place Does Not Mean No Wrong MoveA field note on grace as the floor instead of the ceiling, and the difference between being lost and being gone.
Reading the Weather, Not the FutureA field note on faith-based tarot, a compression cycle, and the difference between a feeling and the verdict it tries to hand you.
The Real CurrencyA field note on authenticity, discernment, and refusing to buy belonging with a counterfeit version of yourself.
We Built the Cage Before the HospitalA field note on 7-OH, addiction, red tape, loneliness, war, and the bridge underneath all of it.
The wave pulls back tooA field note on feeling the low tide coming and staying yourself anyway. Peace that holds while the wave pulls back, the exhaustion underneath the good news, and the difference between the water leaving and you leaving with it.
The Symbol Is Not the WorthA field note on money as a symbol, worth as something older than price, and the strange work of keeping the exchange honest.
Your words are already workingA grounded spell for faith, fear, and speaking yourself back into alignment
The wrong addressRomantic love and divine love are not the same species. Most people spend their whole life treating one like it’s the other, and then wonder why they’re starving.
The ticketA field note on the pawn counter, the discipline of taking less than they offer, and the one thing in the building that was never for sale.
The tagThey told me I could not wear my real name on a small rectangle of fake brass. So I am going to wear it anyway. A field note on the legal name, the actual name, and the daily smuggle that lives between them.
The Spell of Standing the Fuck UpA field note on language, completion, dirty resurrection, and saying a thing until it becomes real.
The pitThey call it a pit for a reason. A field note on the never-ending dish stack, and why the work that does not finish turns out to be closer to the truth than the work that does.
The parking brake at 70A field note on compression, cost, and the smallest survivable repair.
The mirror with a megaphoneA field note on AI, bad actors, false binaries, and the missing grey zone between worshiping the machine and burning it down.
The middleNobody invented the grey zone. Every tradition that thought seriously about how to be a person alive on earth eventually arrived at the same coordinates. The middle is not a compromise. It is where you become capable of seeing clearly.
The fruit was divisionA Gnostic reflection on earth, duality, and the prison of the self
The errand. The retreat sells the idea of transformation. The Errand delivers it, occasionally, without announcement, in a bread aisle. A field note on why the small obligatory task is frequently where the actual practice lives.
The almost. Not failure. Something quieter and more persistent than failure. The thing that looks like patience from the outside and feels like safety on the inside and is neither.
So So Sauce.A field note on autocorrect, language, God’s whisper, and the strange place where nonsense starts telling the truth.
Every Subreddit Becomes a Church Eventually.A field note on Reddit, outrage, belonging, sacred pauses, and the strange way every group eventually starts building commandments.
Actually sickA field note on the body, denial, and the dangerous little contract that says rest has to be earned.
The translation. Can an AI actually do tarot? Both. Always both. The skeptic says no, the practitioner says yes, and both halves are true. The cards were always a translation problem. The language model is a translator. The question is what gets lost.
The real ones. Most of what's sold as a healing crystal is a polished rock from a wholesale catalog. Most tuning forks aren't tuned to anything. Here is what "real" turns out to mean when you stop expecting magic and start asking specifics. The almost is the trap.
The itch you can't reach. The body has a vocabulary. The mind has a different one. Most of what we call wanting is the second one mistranslating the first.
The buried canon.Twelve books the modern world stopped reading. Not the bestsellers. The ones the bestsellers were quietly built on top of. A reading list for people who already read the obvious stuff and noticed it didn't quite reach.
